Term 3 Week 9 'Star of the Week' and Other News

This week's 'Star of the Week' is Ruaridh.
Ka pai, Ruaridh, it's great to have you in our room.

Erin had a great day - this morning she won the Junior Knowledge-a-thon prize - a new bike. This afternoon she was awarded a certificate for 100% attendance for Term 3. What a great way for you to end the term, Erin.

This morning we had Discovery Time with Room 6. Here's some of the things we did to show that we can work with others:

Chris, Jonathan and Ruaridh
Conor and Jack

Libby and Won Jeong
Thank you for your support over the past term. Have a safe, happy and relaxing holiday. Term 4 starts on Monday 14 October at 8:45am. Children are to wear their summer uniform and must have a wide brimmed hat for outside activities.

Measurement

In Maths we have been learning about measurement. Today we had to fit eight rectangles into a bigger rectangle. This proved to be a challenge but between us we found 12 different ways to do this. They are on the classroom wall - come in and check them out. Here we are working to solve the problem.

Plays

Wow! What amazing children we have in Room 13/5. They were fantastic at presenting their plays this afternoon. Their hard work, planning and preparation meant that their performances were very polished. A big thank you for your support at home and thanks for coming along to watch. I hope to have photos up soon.

Term 3 Week 8 'Star of the Week'

This week's 'Star of the Week' is Asher.
Ka pai, Asher, it's great to have you in Room 13/5

We've had a very busy week settling into our new room. I still get muddled up with our room number, but the children are patient with me. We love being in a big, bright, open space and having the hall just next door has been great when we have needed a bit more room. This morning we opened the doors and enjoyed our first Discovery Time with Room 6 and Room 3.

In Religious Education we are learning about Jesus and the Eucharist. As part of this module we made unleavened bread this morning. The children enjoyed making the bread, then eating it. We are also compiling a class recipe book. Everyone will have a turn at bringing the book home and you might like to try a recipe from it. Thank you for your support with the homework sheets.

Our maths lessons have been focused on measurement. We have learnt lots of things - ask your child about non-standard and standard measures; what is important when measuring things and perimeters.

The children love preparing for and performing plays. Once again they have excelled in both their learning of the lines and creating their props. We will celebrate this learning with a performance on Wednesday 25 September, starting at 2pm in the School Hall - next to our classroom. This time space will not be an issue so grandparents, uncles, aunts as well as mums and dads are welcome to attend.

This Sunday, 22 September, the Junior School will be attending 9am mass at Christ the King Church. Please meet outside the Parish Centre at 8:45am. Children are to wear their uniform and will sit with their class.

Term 3 Week 8

At today's School Assembly Ruaridh was awarded a certificate.
Ka pai, Ruaridh, we are proud of you.

This morning Poppy received her first Silver Mathletics certificate. Congratulations, Poppy, keep up the good work.

We have enjoyed our first day in our new classroom. There is plenty of space for us all and we are adapting to the differences.

Thank you to those who have returned your Knowledge-a-thon money. We would appreciate it all in by this Friday (20 September). Remember the prize draw will be on Friday 27 September.

Please put Sunday 22 September in your diary - the Junior School are to attend the 9am Mass.

Term 3 Week 7

On Thursday we dressed in red and black to show our support for Canterbury Rugby. Check us out:

On Friday we wrote with feathers. We quite enjoyed this and some of us thought that it would be good to use a feather for all our handwriting!

Jonathan, Libby, Lachlan and Ruaridh
Rheubyn and George
On Friday afternoon all our classroom gear was moved into our new room. We are excited about being in a new room and having a new name. We will be known as Room 5 from now on (thought the blog name will remain Room 13). Check out these photos:

The 'new' building will be blessed on Monday morning at 8:45am. Then it will be 'business as usual'.

Maths Fun

We are learning about measurement. We have learnt about non-standard and standard measures and why we need standard measures. We have learnt different measurement vocabulary. We also learnt that when we use a ruler to measure anything we have to start at the 0, not the end of the ruler.
Yesterday we worked with a buddy to measure different parts of our bodies. Today we found items around the classroom and in the courtyard that were either less than a metre, about a metre or longer than a metre. We had a piece of string that was a metre long to help us. Check out these photos:

Conor and Libby
Amelia M and Thea
Asher and Won Jeong

Term 3 Week 7

At today's School Assembly Rata was awarded a certificate.
Ka pai, Rata, we are proud of you.

This morning we celebrated the following awards: Poppy - gymnastics placings; Rata - dancer of the day; Jack - most improved player in Touch Rugby; Jonathan - participation in Soccer; Xavier - participation in touch Rugby.
Congratulations to you all.

This will be our last week in our Room 13 Portacom. The move will happen after school on Friday and on Saturday. We will start Week 8 in our new room, at the south end of the hall. It will be good to be back in this building after two and a half years.

On Wednesday we will be having our Knowledge-a-thon 'test'. The children all know the answers as we have practised them in class. Our Room 8 (Year 7/8) buddies will write our answers (we need to tell them what to write) so don't worry about the spelling. Please return your white sponsorship form tomorrow. The number of correct answers will be recorded on each sheet, which will then be sent home for children to collect the money.

This week is Social Justice Week and the theme this year is: Justice at Work. As part of this week we will be sharing lunch with our Room 8 buddies on Thursday. They will provide the food for us, so we will only need morning tea that day. Please let me know if there is any food your child cannot eat.

Please put Sunday 22 September in your diary as the Junior School will be attending the 9am Mass.

Ferrymead Trip

On Tuesday Room 13, Room 12 and Room 4 went to Ferrymead. While there we experienced what life was like 100 years ago. We had to dress up in costumes and wear them all day. The girls' dresses made walking and playing tricky as they were long. We had a great day. A special THANKS to the mums who helped us.
Here's some photos:

Elspeth, Eve and Poppy

Amelia K counting blackballs

George spinning a wheel

Ka pai, Lachlan, we are proud of you.

Yesterday Amelia K, Rata and Amelia M sat dance exams. They each received a badge for their dances. Well done girls.
